Do I Really Need A Mattress Protector?

While that is quite a list of factors working hard to destroy that new, supportive mattress you just bought, there is one simple thing you can do to prevent premature aging of your new mattress investment: Get an Organic Mattress Protector!

A good mattress protector is one that will keep out moisture, dust mites and dead skin cells, while giving you the ability to take it off and put it on easily and wash it. What kind of mattress protector would we recommend here at Nest Bedding? 

We carry two types of mattress protectors; an organic cotton encasement and an organic, waterproof but breathable fitted sheet. Both offer protection but different levels and types of protection from the elements and real life.

The organic mattress encasement is produced with organic cotton, tightly woven, then heated to cause shrinking. It helps protect mattresses from dust mites and prevents them from entering and laying their eggs in your bedding. The barrier cloth is a high thread count SKAL certified organic cotton fabric that is then heat pressed to tighten the fibers to less than a 6 micron opening - recommended to protect against dust mites debris.. Chemical-Free. The protectors utilize a nylon zipper to keep those mites out (brass zippers have too much space in between the teeth). And the zipper zips on 3 sides for ease of use. While this protector is perfect for keeping dust mites and dead skin cells completely out of the mattress, it is not waterproof.

The fitted sheet style protector is Soft and comfortable enough to be used as a sheet. It utilizes a 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton jersey sleeping surface (just like your favorite t-shirt!) and a waterproof polyurethane backing that is breathable and is a food grade urethane, which means it is non-toxic and contains none of the plasticizers that make urethane toxic. And while this protector is waterproof, it only keeps dead skin cells and dust mites off the surface, leaving the rest of the mattress susceptible to dust mites.

If you are allergic to dust mites and want a waterproof feature as well to protect your new organic, natural and non-toxic memory foam mattress, it's recommended you purchase both products, with the encasement on the bottom, and waterproof cover over the top. You would then add your sheets over the entire mattress. 

Now that you have your new mattress well protected, what next? These materials are designed to catch dead skin cells and dust mites, which means it's imperative to remove and launder your protectors once a week. Keeping these clean will prevent them from accumulating dead skin cells, dust mites and dead dust mite bodies.
