Snoring Products: What They Can and Cannot Do
Snoring happens when airflow makes relaxed tissues in the upper airway vibrate during sleep. It is common, but the cause and significance vary. A product that helps one person may do nothing for another, and reduced noise does not necessarily mean an underlying breathing disorder has been addressed.
Start with the cause
Nasal congestion, alcohol close to bedtime, sleeping position, anatomy, medications, and obstructive sleep apnea can all play a role. Before buying a device, consider whether the snoring is new, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms.
Seek medical evaluation: Loud habitual snoring accompanied by pauses in breathing, gasping, marked daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or difficulty concentrating can be associated with obstructive sleep apnea. A clinician should evaluate these symptoms; consumer products cannot diagnose or rule out sleep apnea.
Common product categories
- Nasal strips and external dilators: These may make nasal breathing feel easier for some people with nasal narrowing. They do not open a blocked throat and are not a treatment for sleep apnea.
- Internal nasal dilators: Some users find them comfortable; others experience irritation. Stop using one if it causes pain, bleeding, or breathing difficulty.
- Positional aids: Side-sleeping prompts may reduce position-dependent snoring for some people. They should not restrict movement or create a fall or entrapment risk.
- Oral appliances: Custom devices can be appropriate for selected patients, but fitting and follow-up should be handled by qualified sleep and dental professionals. Poorly fitted devices may cause jaw discomfort or bite changes.
Measure cautiously
A partner's observations or a recording app may help track noise, but neither can diagnose sleep apnea. If symptoms persist, a clinician may recommend an appropriate sleep assessment.
