Choosing an Infant Crib Mattress: Safety Before Marketing Claims

A crib mattress should be firm, flat, correctly fitted, and used in a safety-approved sleep space. Review current safe-sleep priorities before comparing materials.
Top 3 Organic Baby Beds

Materials and certifications can help parents compare crib mattresses, but no label replaces the fundamentals of infant sleep safety. The safest sleep space is a safety-approved crib, bassinet, play yard, or bedside sleeper with a firm, flat mattress that fits correctly and is covered only by a fitted sheet.

Keep the sleep space bare

Do not add a mattress topper, comforter, pillow, quilt, bumper, loose blanket, sleep positioner, plush toy, or other soft object to an infant's sleep space. These products can create suffocation, entrapment, or overheating hazards even when marketed for comfort.

Check the fit and intended use

Use a mattress specifically designed for the crib or sleep product. There should not be gaps where an infant could become trapped. Check current CPSC requirements, product instructions, and recall information rather than assuming that an aftermarket mattress or accessory is compatible.

Understand certifications precisely

Certifications may address particular materials, manufacturing processes, emissions, or testing criteria. They do not mean that a product prevents allergies, regulates an infant's body temperature, eliminates every chemical, or makes additional bedding safe. Verify the exact certification on the current product page and with the certifying organization.

Back for every sleep

Place babies on their backs for naps and nighttime sleep unless their pediatrician gives different instructions for a specific medical reason. Dress the baby appropriately for the room rather than adding loose bedding.

Before purchasing

  • Confirm that the mattress is intended for the exact sleep product.
  • Check dimensions, firmness, labels, instructions, and recalls.
  • Review current product-specific return and warranty terms.
  • Ask a pediatrician about individual medical or developmental needs.
