Tips for Disposing of an Old Mattress in Berkeley Ca.

Dec 12, 2012

If you are looking to dispose of an old memory foam or traditional spring mattress in the Berkeley California area, you can get a hold of the City of Berkeley, who provides this service. All mattresses collected are diverted to recycling, so no worries about them ending up in a landfill, where polyurethane mattresses can take generations to breakdown. Here is the information from the City of Berkeley Website:

Bulk Waste Pick-up Guidelines

The City of Berkeley offers 1 Bulky Waste Pick-up per calendar year for single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings up to 4 units. Advance appointments are required, and must be scheduled by the property owner. Appointments can be made for a Tuesday or Thursday throughout the year.

To participate in the Bulky Waste Pick-up Service:

  • Your Pick-up date can be scheduled for a Tuesday or Thursday throughout the year.
  • The property owner must make the appointment for the Bulky Waste Pick-up. Please call Customer Service in advance of your preferred date, and no later than 2:00pm on the business day before:
    Phone 311 or (510) 981-CITY (2489) or for TTY call (510) 981-6903.
  • If you have to cancel your appointment, please call Customer Service no later than 2:00pm on the business day before:
    Phone 311 or (510) 981-CITY (2489) or for TTY call (510) 981-6903.
  • If you forget to put out your items on the day of your appointment, you will have to wait until next year for another appointment.

Quantity Limit: The maximum amount of trash per residence is 3 cubic yards. This is the equivalent of 20 large (32-gallon) garbage bags. If your material exceeds this limit, you may be charged a fee for the additional amount.

Appointment Day: Set out materials for pick-up by 7:00 am on your pick-up appointment day. Do not set out material more than 1 day ahead of your pick-up appointment.

Another inexpensive way to dispose of a mattress is to give it away on Craigslist. As long as it is not damaged or badly stained, moldy or have any major issues, your old mattress is better than sleeping on the floor for a disadvantaged family. Offering it for free is a great way to keep it out of the junk pile and extend its usefulness.

This information is brought to you by Nest Bedding in Albany Ca/Berkeley Ca, providing long lasting organic latex and wool mattresses and non-toxic memory foam beds, bedding and everything you need for a clean bedroom.
