7 Ways to Keep Bedding Green for Beginners

7 Ways to Keep Bedding Green for Beginners

92% of people involved in a recent study said their buying decisions are affected by whether or not a product is environmentally sustainable.

Going green is something that's probably important to you. You recycle all your plastic, use a refillable water bottle, and carpool with friends when you can. Every small step is a step in the right direction.

While you're already doing a lot to help out Mother Nature, you feel like there's something more you can do. Did you know you can make your bedroom a little greener as well?

Below are seven ways you can keep bedding green. Some of these tips are surprising ways to help out the Earth so keep reading!

1. Try Out Linen

A staple in the closet is a comfortable pair of linen pants. Why not bring linen to your bed? It's a great year-round sheet to keep on hand.

With each wash and sleep, your linen sheets will become softer. They regulate temperature well and is easy on the skin! You'll feel good while sleeping while feeling good for choosing an environmentally-friendly material.

Linen is made from flax, and flax hardly requires all those harmful pesticides when growing! The flax seeds are also pressed and used to make other things like linseed oil.

2. Look for Organic Cotton

While you're in the process of redecorating for summer, trying picking up some organic cotton sheets.

We know cotton sheets to be on the affordable side while also being durable and breathable. They're super soft and provide a cozy feeling after a long day. However, as you shop for cotton sheets, look for organic cotton.

There are many benefits of organic bedding. When farmers grow certified organic cotton, they aren't allowed to use pesticides and chemicals. This reduces harm to the farmer and the number of chemicals that run into nearby lakes.

Check the label before you buy to make sure it's organic!

3. Give Eucalyptus Sheets a Chance

Eucalyptus is one of the best options for bedding if you're trying to be more green. It's kind to the earth and ethically sourced.

When cutting down the eucalyptus tree, farmers cut the root without fully uprooting the plant. This allows for more growth! The tree then undergoes the Lyocell process to produce the fabric.

The pulp is spun with a chemical solvent; a solvent reused several times to reduce water waste. The fabric made is long-lasting, hypoallergenic, and resistant to dirt.

4. Buy Some Hemp Sheets

Do you struggle with allergies and a poor immune system? Hemp sheets are one of the best options for bedding to try.

Naturally, hemp is anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic. They may be your saving grace if you have severe asthma. Not only will they help out your body, but they also help out the Earth.

When looking for hemp sheets, make sure you pick out an organic set. Hemp isn't naturally super white, so hemp sheets are great if you want to decorate with more earth tones.

Factories making these sheets cut down on the use of chemicals. Fewer chemicals don't mean worse sheets. In fact, hemp is about eight times more durable than cotton.

5. Keep an Eye Out for Recycled Materials

Believe it or not, recycled water bottles make great bedding. Yes, the hard plastic people drink out of can be turned into soft bedding for your room.

Plastic water bottles can take hundreds of years to decompose. As they sit there in the ground, they leak tons of toxins. Plastic water bottles that make their way into bodies of water can harm the ecosystems in the area.

Take a second to think about all the water bottles you see thrown on sidewalks and streets. Look at the large landfill piles containing millions of water bottles. Buying bedding that recycles these materials is a step in the right direction!

6. Research the Makers

As you make your world a little greener, research some of your favorite companies that make bedding to see how they treat the earth. Are their materials ethically sourced? Are they a fair-trade company?

Not only is fair-trade cotton produced without pesticides, but it also wasn't produced using child labor! It protects the Earth and protects the people. Fair-trade systems pay the workers fairly and help create windows of opportunities for working communities all around the world.

7. Think About Your Mattress

While many people don't replace their mattress as often as they should, you're supposed to replace it every decade or so.

Unfortunately, most mattress foam these days include tons of chemicals that are harmful to the planet. Polyfoam is widely used but is produced using the same steps used to make petroleum.

Organic mattresses can be a bit on the pricey side, but it's a great thing to keep in mind when you're financially able to replace your mattress one day. As for now, don't beat yourself up too much about it.

What About the Laundry?

You'll obviously have to wash your sheets, and there are ways to make the laundry process greener as well!

Try to look for an energy-efficient washer machine, and air dry your sheets if able! Avoid as many nasty chemicals as you can in your detergents, and use cold water!

These little changes to your laundry routine can greatly impact the Earth and while leaving your sheets in good condition! Airdrying also decreases electricity bills.
