How to Keep Up with Fresh Home Furnishing Trends, Bedroom and Beyond

Young couple redecorates with home furnishing trends

Young couple redecorating with home furnishing trends

According to a recent survey, bedrooms are the third most common renovation projects that homeowners undertake, right behind kitchens and bathrooms.

When you look at the cost breakdowns, you'll notice something interesting.

Overall, the average cost of any project was in the thousands. People aged 25 to 34 had the highest average of any age group at just over $4,500. The lowest was for the 35 to 44 age group at $2,900.

While there could be any number of factors affecting the bottom line, one thing influencing the price of the renovations could be the younger generation's desire to follow current trends outweighing their desire to save a few dollars.

Fortunately, we believe it's possible to do both.

Keeping up with the newest trends in home furnishings for the bedroom and beyond may seem difficult—especially if you're on a tight budget—but we've got some ways to make that task a bit easier.

Step One: Conduct a Straw Poll

Most of your family and friends have conducted their home renovation projects at one point or another. Along the way, they have collected wisdom regarding do's, don'ts, the best places to get good deals, and what you should avoid at all costs.

Whether you call everyone up, send out a mass email, or (brave soul!) toss your questions out on social media, you'll be sure to take in plenty of food for thought.

Don't be surprised if some of the advice you get seems to be contradictory. Everyone's experiences are individualized, and two of your friends might be operating under different standards and expectations. So, a difference of opinion (and therefore contradictory advice) is natural.

Take what you can from the advice, but don't let this step be where your research stops.

Step Two: Streamline Internet Searches

The internet can be simultaneously one of the most helpful and least helpful avenues of research. One of the reasons the internet makes for a problematic search tool is the sheer volume of information available on it. There's a staggering amount of data available online, and the size is increasing every day.

Here's the daily breakdown as of late 2017:

  • 1,209,600 new data-producing social media users each day
  • 656 million tweets per day
  • More than 4 million hours of content uploaded to Youtube every day, with users watching 5.97 billion hours of Youtube videos each day
  • 67,305,600 Instagram posts uploaded each day
  • There are over 2 billion monthly active Facebook users, compared to 1.44 billion at the start of 2015 and 1.65 at the start of 2016
  • Facebook has 1.32 billion daily active users on average as of June 2017
  • 4.3 BILLION Facebook messages posted daily
  • 5.75 BILLION Facebook likes every day
  • 22 billion texts sent every day
  • 5.2 BILLION daily Google Searches in 2017

Researching topics on the internet can sometimes feel like drinking from a firehose. What does this mean for you? It means that although the information you seek may be available online, it's nestled among mounds of irrelevant information.

That's why you need to be smart about your time online. Rather than resorting to Google with all your questions, consider running smaller, more localized searches through individualized sites such as HGTV, Southern Living, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, or any place that you believe best typifies the style you're seeking to emulate.

Step Three: Consult with Experts

Most of us can't afford to hire interior decorators or boutique firms to help us keep up with the latest in home furnishing trends. We can, however, access their public social media accounts. This access is more valuable than most people realize.

Many professionals leverage social media to show off their expertise. Through their Instagram accounts, Facebook posts, blogs, and websites, we can get a peek at their current projects and note the trends they're following. Many of them will even answer brief questions via Twitter!

But we don't have to rely on the famous, seemingly untouchable experts. Most of us don't realize the wealth of knowledge and experience available in our backyards.

No matter where you live, your area has its own set of local experts. They might work from home, run small startups, teach at the community college, or design sets for regional theatre. Most of them do what they do because they have a passion for it, and passionate people love talking about their projects!

Some of them might even have personal connections with your friends and family, making it easier for you to connect.

Don't overlook these folks. They're good as gold.

Step Four: Consider Timeless Pieces

Although this post centers on how to keep up with the freshest home furnishing trends, there's something to be said for investing in some classic pieces that will never go out of style. In doing so, you're not limiting your ability to keep your rooms fresh.

On the contrary:

Trends tend to be surface matters. If you invest in a few timeless pieces, it will prove simple in the future to switch out smaller, complimentary pieces that suit the current fashions.

A great example of this is your bedroom set. A classic, sturdy style can periodically freshen up with newer, trendier sheets, pillows, duvets, and accompanying wall hangings.

Investing in quality bedroom furniture—particularly in a quality mattress—is so essential. Over the next ten years, you'll spend approximately 26,000 hours in your bed. Investing in a quality mattress goes a long way toward making sure that those hours are comfortable and restful, which is a somewhat more critical consideration than whether or not your pillows match the latest trends!
